Home / CRS News / Michael J. Racenstein, MD, FACR to Receive Chicago Radiological Society’s Gold Medal


Chicago, IL – The Chicago Radiological Society (CRS) will honor Michael J. Racenstein, MD, FACR, Chair of the Department of Radiology and Director of Breast Imaging Services at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, with the presentation of the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor the Chicago Radiological Society can bestow upon a member. The Distinguished Service Award or Gold Medal will be presented to Dr. Racenstein at the March 15, 2018, CRS Meeting, recognizing his many years of service to radiology and breast imaging as well as his leadership in organized medicine on local, state and national levels.

A native of New York City, Michael Racenstein received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. Dr. Racenstein then moved to California where he completed an internship in the Department of Surgery at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles followed by a residency in UCLA’s Department of Radiological Sciences. Dr. Racenstein remained at UCLA to complete fellowship training in Mammography and General/Vascular Ultrasound while also serving as a consulting radiologist for two group practices in the Los Angeles area.

Dr. Racenstein returned to the Chicago area in 1994 as attending radiologist at Rush North Shore Medical Center in Skokie, later serving as Chair of Breast Imaging while also serving as Clinical Instructor at Rush Medical College in Chicago. In 2008, he left Rush North Shore to became attending radiologist and later Chair of the Department of Radiology and Director of Breast Imaging Services at Alexian Brothers Medical Center where he continues to serve today. Dr. Racenstein has also served as the Lead Mammographer for the Association for Women’s Healthcare in Chicago and currently also serves as consultant to both Diagnostic Imaging of Chicago and North Shore Cardiology Consultants.

Past president of the Chicago Radiological Society and a member of its Executive Committee since 1999, Dr. Racenstein has been active in the North Shore Unit of the American Cancer Society, serving on its Board of Directors and later as President as well as chairing its Relay for Life Committee. At the local level, Dr. Racenstein has also served on numerous committees and councils for both Rush North Shore Medical Center and Alexian Brothers Medical Center.

At the state level, Dr. Racenstein is Past President of the Illinois Radiological Society (IRS) and has served as a member of its Executive Committee since 2001. He is the current chair of the IRS Nominating Committee and a member of the IRS Mammography Committee.

On the national stage, Dr. Racenstein has served Illinois as both Alternate Councilor and Councilor to the American College of Radiology (ACR) and currently serves on the ACR Ethics Committee, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Standards Committee and ACR Carrier Advisory Committee (CAC) Network in addition to past service on the ACR Economics and Policies Committee, Coding & Nomenclature Committee, and ACR Task Force on Breast Cancer.

Dr. Racenstein is a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society, Society of Breast Imaging, and Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), previously serving on the RSNA Technical Exhibits Committee. He is also a member of the Illinois Medical Society and the Chicago Medical Society, having served as Alternate Delegate to the CMS Council, and has also served on the CT Registry Exam Committee for the American Registry of Radiation Technologists. For his service to organized medicine, Dr. Racenstein was recognized and awarded Fellowship in the ACR in 2010.

Dr. Racenstein and his wife Meg are parents to three children, Melanie, Miles and Mickey, and both enjoy skiing, golf, travel, and exercise.
