The “Chicago Radiation Society” was the name suggested for our Society in early correspondence dating back to July 1956 between Walter Moos, Jacques Ovadia and Ted Fields. An early version of the first Rules and By-Laws contains the name “The Chicago Medical Physicist Society”, and when the group was incorporated on the eight day of April 1957, the name had evolved to “The Radiation and Medical Physics Society of Chicago”.
In only two years the organization had grown to such an extent that the name was officially changed to “The Radiation and Medical Physics Society of Illinois”.
After six more years, the Society could represent the five-state Midwest region as “The Midwest Chapter of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine”.

Chapter members have also been elected as AAPM Board of Representatives at Large, held Chairmanships of AAPM Committees and served in other capacities; however, the number of individuals involved is too numerous to mention here.
Lawrence H. Lanzl won the William D. Coolidge Award for distinguished contributions to Medical Physics in 1978.
